A Note from Turk
11/8/12
"Growing up in New York city during the 50's and having my Dad Dominick Turso and brother Ron Turso being musicians gave me a love for music. I had access to hearing and seeing so many of the finest people jazz has produced. At 11 years old I started going to the Metropole cafe on Broadway [or 7th ave] at 48th st on Saturday afternoons and when school was out during the summer weekdays and later at night. Standing outside on the street looking through the double glass doors seeing and hearing clarinetist Tony Parente from New Orleans with pianist Sammy Price and drummer Sam Ulano. Coleman Hawkins, Roy Eldridge or Charlie Shavers, Claude Thornhill, Arvell Shaw and Mickey Sheen played Matinee performances. Red Allen nightly with various rhythm sections and guests. Gene Krupa with Charlie Ventura, John Bunch, and various bass players plus so many others. after some time the musicians recognized me and said hello as they made their way across the street to the Copper Rail a bar and soul food place they hung out at on their breaks. One Saturday Jack Crystal [father of Billy Crystal] invited me in a bought me a coke I was thrilled to be inside. As years went by I got to know many of these great men and Red Allen had me sit in on alto along with my boyhood friend drummer Les DeMerle . Red took a liking to me and sort of mentored me by bringing me along to a couple of gigs and encouraging me and giving advice. I practiced constantly and listened to recordings my dear friend Red Carraro gave to me.
As the years passed this happened time and time again with Gene Krupa ,who after hearing me one night said "you're a good tenor player" thrilling me more than I can say. The fact is being around these men I felt insignificant and not deserving of the comments they made. But I grew more confident in time and soon Billy Mitchell, Al Cohn and Zoot Sims, Sonny Stitt, Eddie Lockjaw Davis, Johnny Griffin,Dizzy Gillespie ,Roy Eldridge,Sonny Rollins, Dexter Gordon,Sal Nistico, Pepper Adams, Dave Frishberg, Red Rodney, Bob Cranshaw and Buddy Rich and many others all became friends. Hiring me, recommending me, and inspiring me to go on against the odds.
Today I feel so grateful and proud to have had these truly great people in my life and a little sad so many are gone from this world. Now I am trying to pass on my knowledge and experiences to a new generation of jazz musicians. I may write down these experiences in detail in the near future if anyone is interested...."
